Real Weddings: Gary & Rachel, I

I finally have time to post the much awaited blog of Gary and Rachel's winter wedding!

Cory and I traveled to the amazing Germania Place venue on one of the coldest and windiest days before Christmas in 2008. Stepping outside the cab took our breath away until we entered through the beautiful, old architecture doorway. Ahhhh! To be greeted by the sweet breath of the heated entryway was the first beautiful experience of this amazing evening. As we stepped up the entrance further, we were greeted warmly and kindly by family and friends who were bustling about preparing candles to be placed in every nook and cranny of the rich foyer.

We found Rachel upstairs being pampered by all her bridesmaids, all smiling and laughing the afternoon away together,  and toasting champagne to the next step in life and love for their close friend and sister. I love experiencing these moments of sisterhood before a wedding! It is one of my favorite things about a wedding and I always think of all my own sisters, mothers, grandmothers, aunts, nieces and dearest girl friends and our own bond of love and kinship we all share. How lucky we are to have each other in life!

Real Weddings: Gary & Rachel, II

As the late afternoon spilled over into evening, the chandeliers were dimmed, candles were lit and the grand ballroom glowed to life as guests arrived.

Hanukkah began for all of Chicago this moment on December 21st, 2008.

The amazingly talented Maxwell Street Klezmer Band started playing traditional Jewish music, in their well-known kaleidoscope style.

A quiet joy was palpable in the room as Rachel and her parents entered through the great doors and made their way underneath the beautiful Chuppah wedding canopy. The entire ceremony was in a giant circle comprised of all the guests, friends and family. One could feel the love and support being directed to Gary and Rachel standing at the center of the room.

Gary and Rachel chose exquisite rings custom designed by Israel Blessing in the Holy Land to present to each other. Their incredibly stunning ketubah was an intricate piece of art, and we are completely honored to have seen it in person and testify it being signed by their Rabbi and halakhically competent witnesses.

How do I even begin to describe Gary and Rachel's reception?

How about WOW! I've never in my career seen more gorgeous roses! Bonnie Flower Shop, Inc. went above and beyond for this winter wedding with the highest quality center pieces that FILLED every table in sight! Not only were the center pieces simple, classic, lovely and gorgeous, but the top-notch, red, pink and white color roses smelled so delicious I wanted to eat them right then and there in front of hundreds of people!

Round tables were set with formal dinner ware and center pieces illuminated by hundreds of candles. The elegant hand-made favors? Miniature scrolls of thanks and blessings with a burgundy pouch of velvet placed upon the small, clean, white bread plates on each table. So lovely in texture and rich in thought!

There were a couple surprises during the reception. First, Rachel's brother, David, is a professional break dancer and had rallied a few of his closest colleagues to perform as their "toast" to Gary and Rachel. To top it off, the performance had been kept secret between Rachel and her brother as a surprise to all the guests, family and groom! Yah, these guys totally rock and are incredibly cool and how could we not have had a blast watching and capturing their performance to the bride, groom and guests?

The break dancing performance wasn't Rachel's only surprise to her groom. As mentioned in their engagement photo shoot, Rachel is an amazing vocalist for Happy Butterfly Foot. In secret, she had written a song for Gary and performed it as her toast to him just before their first dance. There truly wasn't a dry eye in the room as the couple danced their first dance as husband and wife. Soon after that, the entire room of people got up and surrounded the bride in a circle and danced around her singing songs of praises about her - the "gladdening of the bride."

Haunukkah: Festival of Lights. Gary and Rachel's wedding seemed to me the ultimate "Winter Night's Dream." A night of grace and filled with so many blessings of new life, joy, support and love. We were most humbled and honored to be a part of Gary and Rachel's wedding in Chicago!
